Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house, is expanding its presence in Asia with new sales formats and categories tailored to collectors in the region. As part of its expansion plan, Sotheby’s has launched its first-ever online auction of China’s famous Moutai spirit, designed specifically for collectors in mainland China. The auction leverages the popularity of WeChat, the country’s most popular social media platform, to allow its 1.24 billion users to bid online conveniently and seamlessly.
Liquid Jade: Moutai features over 50 lots of rare Moutai, including more than 10 lots of the highly sought-after Moutai bottled under “screw cap” from 1987 to 1996 and over 15 lots of Moutai in their original cartons from 1999 onwards. The bottles are all handpicked by Paul Wong, Head of Department, Sotheby’s Wine & Spirits, China, and represent vintages spanning from the 1980s to the present day.
Jean Qian, Managing Director of Sotheby’s China, stated that the auction house aims to integrate fully into the collecting habits of Chinese collectors and will further optimize the user experience within its WeChat mini program. Sotheby’s hopes to build a richer and more instant experience for its collectors, which will effortlessly fit into their lifestyle. The auction is open for bidding until March 3 and can be viewed on Sothebys.com and the company’s branded app.
