An unassuming Chinese jade box, originally purchased as a cigarette box for £8 almost 90 years ago, has been uncovered in a Dorset farmhouse by an auctioneer from Charterhouse Auctions. The spinach-green box, measuring 14cm wide, was sitting unnoticed on a table in the landing of the farmhouse among other items of little value. Richard Bromell, the auctioneer at the Sherborne-based firm, discovered the fabulous little box and has now valued it at £40,000 to £60,000.
The box was bought by the current owner’s great grandmother in 1934, who lived in Belgravia at the time. It was purchased from John Sparks, one of the most respected London dealers in Chinese art, who supplied an international clientele, including Queen Mary. Sparks received the Royal Warrant of Antiquary of Chinese Art in 1926.
Charterhouse Auctions will be hosting an Asian Art auction on April 5th, and the Chinese jade box is expected to fetch an impressive sum. Interested parties can contact Charterhouse Auctions at 01935 812277 or email rb@charterhouse-auction.com for more information.
