Vendor demands fair compensation for antique porcelain tiles crushed by passing car at Jingdezhen market

It’s not easy for people who set up stalls outside to sell their wares. They have to wake up early and spend all day at the market, hoping to make good sales. But if they don’t sell anything, it can be quite frustrating. Sometimes, unexpected things happen and they may suffer losses. If they can come to an agreement with the other party involved, it’s not so bad. But if they can’t, it can lead to conflicts and that’s not good.

In Jiangxi’s Jingdezhen antique market, a vendor selling porcelain tiles had set up her stall early in the morning. As it was a market for antiques, the goods sold there were valuable and attracted many customers as well as passing vehicles. Unfortunately, a passing car drove over the vendor’s stall, crushing her porcelain tiles. The vendor demanded compensation from the driver, who offered her only 200 yuan.

The vendor was not satisfied with this amount and insisted that her porcelain tiles were valuable antiques from the Ming and Qing dynasties. As the tiles were now broken into even smaller pieces, she demanded 1,200 yuan in compensation. The driver refused to pay this much and insisted on only 300 yuan. The two parties continued to argue and it’s unclear how the matter was resolved.

Since both driving and setting up stalls were permitted in that area, neither party was in violation of any rules. This made things complicated as neither side was willing to compromise on the compensation amount. It’s difficult to come to an agreement in such situations. Netizens commented that this was a classic case of “pengci” (a term used to describe people who intentionally stage accidents to extort compensation).
