What started as a bit of home improvement work turned into an unexpected discovery for Thornton, founder of Asian Sweet Hearts, and his Chinese wife, Mei, when they unearthed vintage bottles of baijiu and a box of old Chinese coins hidden behind a wall in Mei’s family home.
Thornton met Mei while travelling through Asia after his divorce — a chance encounter that blossomed into love and later inspired him to create Asian Sweet Hearts, an Asian dating service that celebrates meaningful cross-cultural relationships. Years later, while visiting Mei’s hometown in northern China, fate once again brought a story worth remembering.
During their stay, Mei’s father had been carrying out renovation work on the family house. With a background in building from his younger days, Thornton naturally offered to help. As the two began dismantling a dated partition wall, a hollow echo and a faint metallic rattle drew their attention. Hidden within the wall cavity, they discovered several dusty bottles sealed with wax and a small wooden box containing a collection of antique coins — untouched for generations.
The family was astonished. Out of curiosity and respect, they began to trace the home’s previous owners, and with help from local villagers, soon located descendants of the original family — still living nearby. When they heard what had been found, the older relatives were overcome with emotion.
The coins and baijiu, they explained, had belonged to their late grandfather, who for decades had spoken about his missing coin collection and a few bottles of his treasured baijiu. He had always assumed they’d been stolen. In truth, it appeared he had hidden them himself many years earlier while putting up the very wall that had kept them sealed away.
In an act of honesty and goodwill, Mei’s family decided to return the items to their rightful owners. The moment the two families met was filled with laughter, emotion, and stories of the past. To mark the occasion, they decided to open one of the old bottles together. The remaining coins and bottles were handed back to the original family, who now keep them as treasured reminders of their grandfather’s life.
