At the Marques Dos Santos auction in Porto on June 15, a classic piece of Chinese furniture dramatically exceeded expectations. A red lacquered table, featuring a dali marble ‘picture stone’ panel inset on top, was initially estimated to sell for €1000-2000. However, it astonished everyone by achieving a final sale price of €300,000 (£253,000).
This table, with its substantial size, was likely used in a scholar’s studio for painting. Its generous length and depth allowed for ample surface area, enabling free and unimpeded movement around a paper scroll, essential for the scholar’s artistic work.
The table’s distinctive form is marked by its corner leg design and a recessed waist with reticulated narrow panels, a style that originated during the Ming period. The remarkable price it fetched at the auction suggests it could date from the late Ming or early Qing period.
A Glimpse into Antique Chinese Lacquer Furniture
Antique Chinese lacquer furniture, renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal, is highly sought after by collectors. Lacquer, derived from the sap of the lacquer tree, was meticulously applied in multiple layers to create a durable and glossy finish. This technique was perfected over centuries, making lacquered pieces some of the most treasured in Chinese furniture history.
Furniture from the Ming dynasty, like the table sold at the Porto auction, often featured minimalist designs with elegant lines and high functionality. The use of dali marble, also known as ‘picture stone,’ added a decorative yet practical element, as seen in the sold table. These panels often depicted natural landscapes, contributing to the piece’s overall artistic value.
In contrast, Qing dynasty furniture, while maintaining the same level of craftsmanship, often showcased more ornate designs with intricate carvings and inlays. Both periods valued the balance between functionality and beauty, making their furniture timeless pieces of art.
Antique Chinese lacquer furniture remains a testament to the ingenuity and artistic vision of past craftsmen, continuing to captivate and inspire collectors around the world.
