300-Year-Old Chinese Mummy’s Shocking Transformation Within Hours of Coffin Being Opened

Chinese archaeologists were baffled by the rapid deterioration of a 300-year-old mummy’s face and skin within hours of opening its coffin. The well-preserved body was found alongside two others in Xiangcheng, Henan province, central China. While the other two individuals had decomposed to bones, this one remained almost perfectly intact.

The Chinese did not intentionally preserve bodies, but they did use massive coffins and stable tomb chambers to protect them. The physical structure of the body was important to them, as the dead person was expected to live on in the tomb in early China.

Occasionally, bodies in the Qing Dynasty were naturally preserved by the conditions around the coffin. This may have been the case with this particular mummy, as it was found in a lacquered coffin covered in charcoal, which prevented bacteria from getting in.

However, when the coffin was opened by Xiangcheng historians, the man’s face initially appeared normal, but within hours, it turned black and emitted a foul odor. Historian Dong Hsiung proposed an alternate hypothesis, suggesting that the man’s relatives might have utilized certain methods to preserve the remains. After the coffin was unsealed, the natural degradation process could begin in earnest.

Despite the rapid deterioration, experts are working hard to preserve what remains of the mummy. According to Dong Hsiung, the clothing on the body indicates that the man was a high-ranking official from the early Qing Dynasty, which lasted from 1644 to 1912 and was the final imperial dynasty of China.

The Qing Dynasty and the preceding Ming Dynasty are known for their well-preserved corpses. In 2011, a 700-year-old mummy of a high-ranking woman from the Ming Dynasty was discovered by chance in excellent condition in eastern China.

The discovery of the 300-year-old mummy is significant as it sheds light on the ancient burial practices of the Qing Dynasty. As experts continue to examine the body and the burial site, it is hoped that more insights into this fascinating period of Chinese history will be gained. The discovery is also a reminder of the rich history and culture of China and the mysteries that still await discovery.
